A video showing an Indian woman drying clothes on the balcony of the ultra-luxurious Atlantis, The Palm Hotel in Dubai has sparked many reactions. The viral video is garnering both amusement and criticism. Earlier this week, Pallavi Venkatesh shared an Instagram video capturing her mother hanging clothes to dry on the balcony of the famed hotel. The caption read, “Moms just momming at Palm Atlantis.”

In the video, the elder Ms. Venkatesh is seen carefully hanging a pair of shorts on the guard rail. The camera then pans to reveal another balcony with clothes similarly laid out to dry in the sun.

The video prompted a slew of “peak desi mom” comments, highlighting the relatable nature of the scene for many viewers. However, some commenters criticized the act as inappropriate for such a high-end establishment.

Since being shared, the video has racked up 11.1 million views and over 900 comments.

“Moms are such cuties,” wrote one Instagram user.

“You can take mom out of India but to take India out of mom is just impossible,” another quipped.

Many, however, criticized the act as “bad manners.”

In Dubai, hanging clothes to dry on balconies is outlawed by authorities. In 2021, the Dubai Municipality had asked residents not to hang their laundry on their balconies or windows to maintain the city’s aesthetic.

Responding to the viral clip, Atlantis, The Palm issued a statement acknowledging the incident. The Hotel emphasized its commitment to maintaining the hotel’s luxury standards.  They also stated an understanding of the cultural practices of their diverse clientele.

The video and the subsequent response from the hotel have sparked a wider conversation about cultural habits and the expectations of guests in luxury settings.
